Christopher Jon :

I’d definitely rather have fewer high end mics than a bunch of cheap ones. And I’d avoid those generic rebranded Chinese mics like the plague (way hyped, brittle high end). At least it’s worth one solid higher end mic and perhaps a good ribbon – although too often a 58 ends up in front of a guitar cab anyway.
:-/

Also, while I love my API 525, keep in mind it has a fixed attack and rather fast release times, so it’s not a good all rounder. It’s a fantastic vocal compressor, and can be pretty awesome on bass and guitar as well, which may cover all of your needs. I’m currently looking at adding a Pete’s Place BAC-500 to my lunchbox – FET compressor with two discrete Pacifica op amps and a custom output transformer.

A channel strip may work for you as well – but do some research on the API sound versus Neve sound (your two options listed above). I mean they’ll both be awesome at that level, but it’s just a matter of personal preference. Just from general rock listening you’re probably more used to hearing the classic Neve sound on albums, but I happen to be a big API fan (I like both of course!).

Remember if you go the lunchbox route you/we/I could also DIY you a vintage style API 312 preamp for much less than purchasing a new one (in fact we could probably build you 2-3 of them for the same price). Although the Eisen EAC312v kits are no longer around I spoke with Jens Eisen about a substitute kit (from Classic API) and what tweaks would be needed to match the two EAC312v pres I’ve already built.

Finally, while I’m sure the Burl’s are fucking amazing, the HEDD is also fucking amazing and in context, quite a bit cheaper!

There's some really great stuff on here Scott... a few of these things, like the Crane Song converter, are on my list as well. As for mics, I'm personally a fan of having a lot of cheaper mics, (with good pre-amps,) rather than just one or two higher end ones. That being said, the two nicer mics I like for vocals are the Neumann TLM 103 ($1099.95) and the AKG C414 ($999 - $1049). The 103 has the same capsule of the U87 and a nice clean signal... the AKG is a cool mic to have as a jack of all trades. As far as some just cool mics to have, I can't say enough good about the Studio Projects mics... specifically the B1 and C1. Both of them sound amazing for the price, and have a very clean response. The B1 is $120, and the C1 is around $250. There's obviously a ton of choices out there for what you're looking for, but I personally have had a lot of luck with those mics in particular.

I'm totally building up my studio as well at the moment, so I'm right there with you on the whole research thing... there's a ton of information out there, and it's easy to get lost. It's cool to see someone else setting up a bunch of similar gear though for a similar cause. Hope it all comes together for you soon!

Right now I'm using the Fender Prosonic head as my main amp (which is definitely part of what I consider my personal sound); however, I am really intrigued by the concept of linking the HD500 to the DT50 via the L6 link technology. I love using the M13 effects, and those are all included on the new HD500. That coupled with real, physical amp modeling via the DT50 sounds like music to my ears. I used the Vetta and was impressed by what that had to offer, but this seems like that but even better. I still have to play through one, though, so I can see if it will realistically work for me.

I've heard those DT50's are noisy as hell. The lead guitarist in my band is mulling over a new rig right now, going to be selling his Mesa, and switching over to the HD500 with some type of a poweramp... Good luck with that list, looks amazing!

Also- that explains why there was so little that needs to be done with your guitar tracks when you've sent them in for Murder The World. We've done a tiny bit of post often to make it sit well with everything else, and in one or two cases on a solo a tiny bit of tube or delay shimmer but otherwise it's been like plug and play.

I've gotten so used to post-production that experience and knowledge of the other side of the process has kind of fallen away especially with how much podcast post I've done (where you're trying to make really terrible audio sound as decent as you possibly can.)

You might not have too hard a time. I got them to send me a modelling effects unit to review it for Alterati back when. Just contacted someone in sales, asked them to get me in touch with a person who handled press reviews. We were getting good traffic- it was right after a boingboing spike.

Unfortunately, Ari kind of didn't take heed of the "install drivers before plugging this in or it could destroy the unit" warnings and so it died before I could even test it out. But on the flip side, why ship a unit that can be destroyed if you plug it in by USB before installing the drivers? So the review wound up being about that. :P

Anyway, point is, if you can find a way that they'll get added visibility as a result of it and you can pitch that to the right person, there's no reason it isn't possible.
